The site was once a pond used as a sewage dump. It was cleaned and dried, and the stadium’s foundations reach about 35 feet below road level.

The 200-foot-diameter building rises 70 feet under a hemispherical roof carried on just 12 columns and 11 box-girder trusses. Its clear arena of 110 × 185 feet seats about 3,000 spectators, and the pavilion side adds stepped seating for 2,000 more facing the running track.

Aerated foam-concrete roof decking, the large roof surface and skylights at 20 feet and at the crown keep the arena naturally lit and ventilated.
